Sewing For Baby–April, 2021

I decided to make my grandson a romper for his Easter gift. I also gave him some baby food instead of candy. He seemed to especially like the squeezable pouch of baby food, which his Mama gave him right away. I’ve just been buying a few items when I have a great coupon, or there is an amazing sale. I will definitely look out for those pouches, again. I’ve made him squash, mashed peaches and pears, and other regular food at various times while he is over here, but thought a few prepared jars might be handy for his Mama at times. He also liked the Strawberry Apple Spinach Teethers I bought.

He was perfectly content to bang 2 plastic eggs together for a while. We know he will be gobbling candy by next Easter, if allowed.

I used Simplicity 1447, and made view C. I made the large size, which says it’s 18 months, even though I know it will be too big. He is growing so rapidly that by summer, it will likely fit. If not, we will hope for a sunny fall:)

I have had this fabric for many years in my stash and love it. I was happy to find a purpose for it. Matching plaids was a challenge I have not tried for a while, but with the help of my trusty seam ripper, I prevailed until I was satisfied. I made it while on vacation to the beach, in the camper, so I had plenty of time to mess around with it to get it right. I used a zipper in the back, as called for, white bias tape around the neck and armholes and snap tape at the crotch.

I made a mistake and cut the snap tape one snap too short. I centered the piece I had cut, and just made sure all edges were finished well and hemmed. It looks fine on the outside, but won’t win any prizes at the fair on the inside!

I would like to try this pattern again. I’d like to see how this one fits first and if it seems like it will be as cool and comfortable for him as it looks on the pattern envelope.

  1. Kimberly has a home kit that you can make the “pouches” with for a fraction of the cost. I’ve filled them for her a time or two and it’s really easy. Nathan really loves them!

  2. I made a bunch of those when our kids were growling up and they seem to get easier the more you make and it was a great way to use up small pieces of fabric. I ended up just skipping the snaps in the crotch and pulling the whole thing down and up to change diapers. I think you did very well on the first one.

  3. Oh the romper is sooo adorable. Brings back memories of me making rompers for my son when he was little. Love the blue and white plaid.
My thrifty week was I worked several days on organizing our shed and going through every single tote, tool chest etc. so we are not running to the hardware store to buy something that we know we have but can not find. Projects for us are done on a short time frame as my husband only has so much free time. If we cannot find something the hardware store is only 5 minutes away. It is a big shed so I still have lots to do. We had two house remodeling projects since is has had a deep organizing so it was crazy unorganized.
I was able to take a trip to see my 2 sisters over Easter break since I have my covid vaccine. I have wanted to share perennial bulbs and plants with them for several years and this was a good time to dig some and take to them. It warmed my heart when my sister was so excited that the lilies and iris’s had already grown in a week. I helped her plant them while I was there. My other sister told me this morning it inspired her to work in her flower beds as she was planting the ones I gave her.
Have a wonderful blessed week Becky. Your posts are so inspiring to me. Your blog post friend from NW Pennsylvania!!

    1. I always love to hear about others when they organize. So inspiring! I may just get busy myself. I’ve got a lot to clean. Always!

Just got back from camping this afternoon, but won’t be going again for quite some time. Now the garden is calling my name. Never a dull moment:)

It’s so great you got to go see your sisters.

  4. That smile! Wowza!
    Man, he is a cutie!
He’ll be so handsome in his Grandma-made romper.

My Mom made SO many of these for my now 16-year-old when he was little. She gave up on the snap tape and just sewed individual snaps. Worked so much better than the tape. I second the other commenter who said it’s a great way to use up fabric scraps – and have a really snazzy looking little one!

My kids had so many Grandma-made clothes that they were well into elementary school before they realized that other kids didn’t have Moms or Grandmas that sewed their clothes. My daughter was so confused when others looked at her weird when she asked “Who made that for you?” instead of “Where did you buy that?” We had to have a talk about how fortunate they were to have a Grandma who loves to sew!

    Thanks for sharing!
