Thriving In My thrifty Week–June 2, 2019

The weather this week acted like summer, so the kids did, too! When we were over at my sister’s on Saturday, Jake asked to come home for the night, and that worked for me. The kids played water balloons, ate popsicles, and ran the sprinklers. Notice I say “ran the sprinklers” not “ran IN the sprinklers” cause that’s what actually happened:). I have no idea why!

My sister did a beautiful job of Alissa’s graduation party. The rest of us pitched in a bit here and there, especially my Mom. Alissa chose her cake, the verse on it, and the guitar picture, as those were all things that were special to her. She had a great time at the party. There was a great turn-out and the day was gorgeous.

Since I graduated from homeschool as well, I used some of my new-found time to clean the laundry room. Imagine this room piled high with odds and ends, and the floor covered with laundry and dirt. I worked on it for a couple of days, at times, and then finished Friday. On Saturday, when Jake came over, Patsy told him to go look at the laundry room. He dramatically fell into a fake faint when he saw how clean it was. Pretty soon, he ran into the room with a few items of his clothing and threw them on the newly cleaned floor. “There!,” he told me. “I fixed it for you, auntie!” Oh, boy! I just had to laugh my head off:)

My aunt gave me some beautiful roses from her flowerbeds.

I worked in the garden quite a bit this week. I planted some corn plants Rob grew and we covered them with row covering so the birds won’t peck them out. Things are really starting to grow. I’ve been trying to pull a few weeds or hoe a little each day so they won’t get ahead of me.

I hope your week went as well as mine did.

  1. Your washer and dryer are so cheerful! They would make me smile every time I did laundry! I do like to do laundry. Yes that’s weird.

    1. I am glad you like to do laundry. I’m not super fond of it. Rob has done a lot, lot, lot of laundry in his time:). Now, we just keep washing loads until we are desperate for clothes, and then we all 3 sit in the living room watching t.v., folding and putting away clothes until we are good for another piece of time! Sad, but true:)

  2. What a beautiful spread for Alissa’s party. Isn’t it amazing how the stuff of life piles up… and so quickly too! Your garden is looking great. I spent a good while in ours yesterday, weeding and mulching.

    1. Yes, my sister wanted to make a grazing table. It was beautiful. Most food was in dishes, then veggies, nuts, crackers and apple slices were scattered all over the tablecloth. It reminded me of a Thanksgiving cornucopia, but in spring! She had a vision in her mind, and placed each thing where she wanted it until it looked the way it did.

  3. You are using your new found time well!!! WOW! You are amazing! Your laundry room and garden look amazing!!! I know you were so proud for Alissa but you NEED to be celebrated too! Congratulations to you!!!

    1. My sister gave me the nicest card, telling me I had graduated:). I’m glad to have a little more time to get some of the things done that have been neglected, that’s for sure, but I will miss having her here so much.

  4. Congratulations to Alissa! Looks like a great party! Love the cake! I wouldn’t have thought to arrange all the food like that; that is so creative. What does Alissa want to do now.
Great job on the laundry room. So funny about Jake.

    1. Alissa has already been working about 20 hours a week. She will work more hours this summer, and then into the fall. She will be doing personal support work, similar to what I do with Jake and Michaela (but every kid is different of course). Who knows if she will do this forever, or if it’s just for now, but she wants to buy a car and some other things.

My sister calls it a grazing table. It was very artistic. Woe to any of us who put something down, though. She had such a vision that she would promptly move the item, until we all just stood around and handed her things or just stood back. I’m really proud of her efforts and how it looked when she was done.

  5. Congratulations to Alissa on her graduation and to you for helping her accomplish it. Well done on the laundry room! Jake is too funny! I’m having serious garden envy when I look at your garden pictures. 🙂 But, I know I am not quite up to the work involved, yet. I have 2 tomato plants and some radish that went to seed (I like radish seed pods to the actual radishes). Hope you have a wonderful week.

    1. Thank you. I hope yours is good, too.
Sadly, yours is another blog I can’t comment on anymore as well, but I do enjoy catching up with you now and then!

        1. I’ll figure it out one day and then wonder what took me so long:). Everyone’s blog just keeps taking me to a screen to start a Blogger blog when I try to sign in to leave a comment. I don’t want another blog!!!!! Yikes! I can’t keep up with the one I have:)

  6. Congrats to both of you on graduating. Will this change your job title now or will you still be taking care of Jake & Michaela? It’s a busy time in the garden. It’s hard to stay caught up. We are getting our first zucchini and yellow squash this week. I spent yesterday & today putting down newspapers and straw around our 90+ tomato plants and caging them. So glad to be finished with that job! Your laundry room looks great! You inspire me to straighten mine up, but it may be a few days. Take care, and enjoy catching up on some things!…Vicky in Ky

    1. Your garden is way ahead of mine! That’s awesome:). We used to grow that many tomatoes at our old place. It’s a lot! Happy canning!

I am going to keep taking care of Jake and Michaela. They need me and I need them right now:). Eventually, I would really love to start teaching piano again, but when I’m ready to start, there is quite a bit to do to build the business up again since I’m at a totally different location. So, I’m waiting until the time is right. But, I really miss doing that. (I taught for many years in different locations and know what to do to get going again, but I really enjoy the teaching much more than the administrating part of the whole business!). I could do both, since piano is always part time, especially at first.

Also, I need to get Rob through his surgery. He’s going to need some assistance when that day finally comes, and I don’t want to be too busy to give that. I will also need to pick up both his hours and mine when that day comes so we can afford to live:). Funny how money is always in high demand.

I’ve decided to go slowly in filling my time with new things–and instead just spend some time getting things done around the house, and then slowly adding things if I really want to.

  7. Jake is so funny. Little boys are so much fun to have around. My sister gave me flowers from her garden this week. They are beautiful. I have been working on the house or the garden all week. We have 3 weeks to get everything ready until we have my youngest’s graduation party here. Lots to do.

    1. He is fun!
I’ve been enjoying your posts, but for some reason, I can no longer comment on your blog. It all just disappears into thin air. But, just know I enjoy your blog:)

        1. If he finds it’s on my end, please let me know! I’m really sad to not be able to comment on several blogs I used to leave comments on!
