Thriving In My Thrifty Week-Aug. 30, 2022

I quickly mowed the lawn one day before it got too hot. It’s been a challenge getting it done on these hot days. I had a good helper. Rob was right there to make sure my helper stayed behind me and away from the mower. His little mower sends out bubbles when it’s full of soap, but he mows and mows with or without the bubbles.

It’s been hard to weed, as well, because it’s been hot, but I keep doing a bit whenever I can. On a. couple of days it was cool enough that I got quite a bit done in the garden. I weeded and planted a little more lettuce, some snow peas and spinach for fall. They have yet to come up, but we are watering frequently in hopes that they seeds will germinate.

I pulled the rest of the carrots and a lot of the beets. I canned beet pickles and carrots.

It’s a good way to put the super ugly carrots into a form where I can use them easily. In the winter, I can make soup quickly, and that’s my main purpose for them. I used some fresh and have a few more of the nice ones in the fridge for fresh eating.

I also canned a few dill pickles, dill beans, and some tomatoes. We picked and ate quite a few veggies from the garden.

On Sunday after church, we slipped away after church for a picnic at a park. This deer came up quite close to us.

    1. I’m sorry you just have dirt. The good part of that is that you don’t have to find the time to mow it! It’s been one of those things that has eluded me lately, and I only am mowing once in a while. It should be done a little more often, but…….that’s how it goes sometimes.

  1. Becky,
Those carrots are indeed “ugly”, but I bet they taste good! Do you plant lettuce when it’s still hot, or wait for cooler temps? I need to weed a ton in the garden–it will take hours, so I need to do a bit each day. I do want to try fall lettuce; I’ve never done it before.

    1. I have planted lettuce 3 times lately. Because it is so hot, most of it did not come up, and much of what did come up did not survive. I’m hoping to get another planting going very soon. The good news is that the few surviving plants will give me a little lettuce and then hopefully, I’ll get one more good batch before it’s too late. I recently bought the first 2 heads of lettuce since spring, so I still feel very happy with my “lettuce” summer.

    1. I think the deer was coming to eat some apples that had fallen near the picnic tables. It did not seem at all disturbed by us, or the huge group of poeople having some kind of party at a near-by group picnic area. Although I’ve seen lots of deer, it really surprised me by how tame and people-friendly it was. The only thing it was scared of was a dog that came by, on a lease, and barked at it. Then it ran:)

  2. Your little worker man shadow is adorable with his own mower..Isn’t life with grands amazing??

I moved last week. Oh my — so many glitches. But I’m here and getting settled in. Just itching to get into my itty bitty garden space to start my garden. Sigh — but I need to do some work before that like get a new driver’s license and license my car..And find a vet for the dog and a doctor and dentist for me..Ha!

But my dog and I have been making friends at the close by dog park. And meeting neighbors. And I got to go to church for the first time in 2 years — oh my, what a blessing.
    More later,
